In the Maternix postpartum recovery program, I (an orthopaedic and pelvic floor Physiotherapist) teach you about tissue healing, body function, strength, the pelvic floor and the core (plus more). If you understand these fundamental principles and can apply them to yourself, you don’t have to be told “no” to the activities you want to get back to. You shouldn’t be held back from what you love to do, or made fearful of movement and activity because you’ve had a baby.
You should be taught how to safely heal postpartum and given the tools to progress your healing properly so that you can get back to what you love, whether that be running, swimming, CrossFit or just playing on the jungle gym with your kids!
Following a knee surgery, people are told to rest, work on regaining range of motion and building their strength back up. They usually go to see a physiotherapists who will help them progress through a rehab protocol. These protocols help to ensure patients don’t do too much too soon following surgery, giving the tissues enough time to heal before gradually increasing function and strength of the limb and body. They are also evidence-based and developed with the advice of doctors, surgeons and physiotherapists.
The same principles should be applied to postpartum recovery to ensure women get the care they need to recover fully following pregnancy and child birth. Whether a women has a vaginal birth or a c-section, the postpartum period is a time of recovery and healing. There should be guidelines and support to help women navigate this time… and currently there is very little of this education and support available.
There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to postpartum healing – everyone is a little bit different. That’s why learning and action together is the best way to fully recover postpartum.
